If you live in Ahmedabad, you already know the 3 pm problem. The sun hits your west-facing glass, the AC runs flat out, and the room still feels like an oven.
Most people blame the AC. The real culprit is usually the window. And the fix isn’t just “put up something dark.” Different rooms need different blinds, and picking the wrong one means you either lose your view, your light, or your electricity bill.
At Sulit, we’ve fitted window blinds in Ahmedabad homes, offices and villas since 2015. Here’s the honest guide we give our own clients and designers: which blind works where, and why.
In this guide
Why Ahmedabad windows need a different approach
Blinds that work in Bangalore or Pune don’t always survive Ahmedabad. Three things make our city different:
- Brutal afternoon sun. Summers regularly cross 45°C, and west and south facades take the worst of it after 2 pm.
- Glass-heavy new buildings. Towers along SG Highway, Bodakdev and Shela use large glazing and full-height windows. Great views, a lot of heat gain.
- Dust. Fabric that traps dust looks tired within a season unless it’s easy to clean.
So the right blind has three jobs here: cut heat, control glare without killing daylight, and stay easy to maintain.
The 7 blinds worth knowing (and where each one shines)
1Honeycomb blinds: the heat fighter
The fabric is built in hexagonal cells that trap a layer of air, so it insulates the window instead of just shading it. That makes honeycomb blinds the first choice for west-facing bedrooms and any room where the AC is struggling.
Best for: bedrooms, west-facing rooms, kids’ rooms
2Triple shade blinds: curtain softness, blind control
Soft fabric vanes sit between two sheer layers. Tilt them open for a gentle view, close them for full privacy. They feel like a curtain but give you the light control of a venetian.
Best for: living rooms, master bedrooms, premium apartments
3Zebra blinds: the daytime-to-night switch
Alternating sheer and solid bands slide over each other. Line them up for daylight, offset them for privacy. Clean, modern and very popular in new flats.
Best for: living rooms, home offices, dining areas
4Roller blinds: simple, sharp, budget-friendly
One flat panel that rolls up neatly. Choose sunscreen fabric to keep the view while cutting glare, or blackout fabric for complete darkness.
Best for: offices, kitchens, study rooms, rental homes
5Wooden venetian blinds: warmth and character
Real timber slats you can angle precisely. They bring a warm, classic texture that pairs well with wooden flooring and earthy interiors.
Best for: studies, libraries, bungalows, cafés
6Exterior blinds and zip screens: stop heat before it enters
An outdoor blind blocks the sun on the outside of the glass, before the heat ever reaches your room. Zip screens lock the fabric into side channels, so wind doesn’t flap it around.
Best for: balconies, terraces, sit-outs, large glass facades
7Motorised blinds: comfort on a timer
Any of the above can be motorised. Set them to close at 1 pm and open at 6 pm, and your furniture and floors stop fading in the afternoon sun. Essential for double-height windows you can’t reach.
Best for: double-height living rooms, villas, smart homes
Quick picks: the right blind for each room
| Room | First choice | Also works | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| West-facing bedroom | Honeycomb (blackout) | Roller blackout | Insulates and fully darkens for afternoon naps |
| Living room | Triple shade | Zebra | Soft light, privacy, view on demand |
| Double-height window | Motorised triple shade or roller | Motorised honeycomb | Out of reach; set it on a schedule |
| Home office | Zebra | Roller sunscreen | Kills screen glare, keeps daylight |
| Kitchen | Roller (PVC / wipeable) | Zebra (washable fabric) | Grease and moisture resistant, easy to clean |
| Balcony / terrace | Zip screen | Exterior blind | Blocks heat outside, stays put in wind |
| Study / library | Wooden venetian | Roman blind | Warm texture, precise light angle |
5 mistakes we see every week
- Choosing by colour first. Pick the fabric function (sunscreen, dimout, blackout) before the shade.
- Measuring inside the frame when you should mount outside. Outside mounting covers light gaps and makes small windows look bigger.
- Using dark blackout on a west window with no lining. Dark fabric absorbs heat and radiates it back into the room. Choose a light-backed or honeycomb option.
- Skipping motorisation on high windows. A manual chain on a 16-foot window is a daily headache.
- Ignoring the curtain-plus-blind combo. A sheer curtain over a roller or zebra blind gives softness in the day and full control at night.
A note for architects and interior designers
You design the space; we make sure the windows don’t undo it. Bring us your drawings or a site photo and our team will suggest the blind type, fabric opacity and mounting for each opening, so your vision survives the Ahmedabad afternoon. We work alongside designers, not around them.
Frequently asked questions
Which blinds are best for heat in Ahmedabad?
Honeycomb blinds insulate best indoors. For maximum effect on large glass, an exterior blind or zip screen stops heat before it reaches the window.
Blinds or curtains: which is better?
Blinds give sharper light control and suit modern, minimal rooms. Curtains add softness and drama. Many of our clients layer both: a blind for function, a sheer curtain for feel.
Can I motorise existing blinds?
Often yes, depending on the blind type and window size. Share a photo and our team will tell you.
How do I clean blinds in a dusty city?
A soft brush or vacuum attachment every two weeks keeps most blinds fresh. Roller and zebra fabrics can be wiped; honeycomb and triple shade need a gentle dusting.
